History of Kuster Company

Kuster Company has been serving the Oil and Gas Industry since 1928. Since Oil was discovered in Signal Hill, California in 1923, Kuster Company was there to supply the Oil/Gas and Geothermal industry innovated downhole instrumentation.

1923

Oil is discovered in Signal Hill California.

1928

Ed Kuster began HK Instruments providing 3" OD Single Shot survey system for directional oil drilling utilizing a spun copper float with bar magnets. The company developed and manufactured directional tools teaming up with John Eastman (later of Eastman Whipstock) who ran the tools in the field.

1945

The Angle Compass Unit/Photoinclinometer was developed using the hemispherical float.

1951

The Multi-Shot Survey System that used 6mm movie film was developed and introduced into the marketplace.

1952

Kuster Company, seeing an opportunity to provide innovation, quality and service in the oilfield worldwide began manufacturing and marketing the bottom hole pressure gauges for which we are now globally known. In the years since, we have designed and implemented dozens of improvements that have resulted in mechanical tools that are more rugged, more accurate and more cost effective.

1960

The Halliburton BT Pressure Gauge designed from DST was a joint development between Halliburton and Kuster Company.

Over the next 40 years, Kuster Co. continued to design and manufacture state of the art measurement tools that have been used throughout the world to survey and record information for the discovery and production of oil and gas products.

Kuster Company consistently continued to respond to the ever- increasing technological needs of our customers through the introduction of electronic instruments, and ongoing upgrades to our mechanical instruments, including improved accuracy and the ability to withstand higher downhole temperatures.

1970

The Geothermal Industry has been a very important market for Kuster Company. Since Kuster Company reputation for designing high temperature Instruments, it was only natural that the Geothermal Industry used Kuster mechanical gauges to record Pressures and Temperature in the hostile Geothermal environments. Along with the mechanical gauges, Kuster now offers State of the Art electronic Memory and Surface Readout Pressure/Temperate/Spinner tools. These tools have been proven to be reliable for supplying accurate downhole data required in the Geothermal Industry.

1990

In the 80’s Kuster developed the first downhole electronic memory gauge to be introduced in the market. Since that time, many advancements in Electronics have lead Kuster to develop and introduce K10 series of Electronic Memory and SRO tools. These tools are unique to any other tool on the market today. The K10 uses a redundant memory design, fast response temperature reading, extended memory and advanced software to make it the most reliable gauge on the market today. These tools are designed and manufactured in the USA.

2000

Introduction of the K10 Series of Electronic Memory Tools. The K10 was designed to be the most reliable downhole memory gauge on the market. It was designed with the Redundant Memory Circuit to allow 4X’s the memory capacity with a redundant memory option. It was also designed to handle firmware updates via the internet to allow customers worldwide to download the latest versions of firmware and software anywhere in the world.

2008

Kuster Company is pleased to announce the K10 HPHT (200C) memory tool designed to operate in downhole conditions up to 200C and 25,000+ psi for-up to 1000 hours. This technology uses FPGA technology and Ceramic packaging.

The introduction of the KPerm (Permanent Downhole Monitoring) was a natural evolution for Kuster Company. The combination of Kuster reliable downhole electronics using quartz technology and manufacturing capabilities is a perfect solution for a permanent monitoring system.

2009

Kuster joined Probe in October of 2009. The combination of Probe and Kuster provides a single platform for clients requiring downhole tools and associated services. Kusters production oriented tools complement Probes well integrity and formation evaluation suite of tools to provide a single source of reliable, cost-effective tools and associated support services.

Our commitment is evident in the performance and reliability of our entire product line and is further evidenced by the loyalty and support we continue to get from our customers. We continue to listen and this will only improve our products as we continue into the next century.
